How to Style an Oversized T-Shirt

The oversized tee is the easiest piece in your wardrobe to get right, and the easiest to get wrong. The difference almost always comes down to proportion rather than price, print or brand.

Balance the volume

An oversized top wants a defined bottom half. Straight-leg jeans, slim denim, cycling shorts or a fitted skirt all give the silhouette somewhere to land. Pairing an oversized tee with equally loose bottoms is the most common mistake — the shape disappears and the whole outfit reads shapeless rather than relaxed.

If you do want a full baggy look, bring the structure back somewhere else: a belt at the waist, a cropped jacket, or shoes with a bit of bulk to anchor the bottom of the frame.

Decide where the hem sits

Left long, an oversized tee reads casual and easy. Tucked at the front only, it reads deliberate. A half-tuck takes two seconds and completely changes the outfit, because it creates a waistline where the cut deliberately removed one.

A full tuck works too, but only with a high-rise bottom. With a mid-rise, the extra fabric bunches and the line is lost.

Three combinations that always work

  • Tee + straight jeans + white sneakers. The default for a reason. Half-tuck the front if the tee runs long on you.
  • Tee + cargo trousers. The utility pockets add structure low down, which balances the volume up top.
  • Tee + bike shorts or a fitted skirt. Maximum contrast between loose and close-fitting — the cleanest way to wear a really roomy tee.

Let the print lead

If the graphic is doing the talking, keep everything else quiet. A bold anime or character print works best against plain denim and plain footwear. Two loud pieces in one outfit compete, and neither wins.

Plain tees are the opposite: they are the quiet layer, so this is where you can push the rest — patterned trousers, a statement jacket, chunky shoes.

Layer without losing the shape

Oversized tees layer better under things than over them. An open shirt, a bomber or an unzipped hoodie frames the tee and adds a vertical line, which makes the whole silhouette look longer. Wearing something tight over an oversized tee traps the extra fabric and creates bulk.

Size with intent

Oversized styles are already cut roomy. Going up a size on top of that usually reads as ill-fitting rather than relaxed. The reliable method is to measure a T-shirt you already own and like, laid flat, and compare it against the size chart on the product page.

Every Dudle oversized tee is bio-washed cotton, so it stays soft through repeated wear and holds its shape rather than stretching out at the neck and shoulders.

Looking after it

Cold wash, inside out, and let it air dry. Printed graphics last far longer out of a hot dryer, and the shoulder seams on an oversized cut keep their drop when the fabric is not repeatedly heat-shrunk.
